{"id":3181,"date":"2020-02-17T14:47:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T10:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/104.152.168.11\/~globalwomens\/?p=3181"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:09:13","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T09:09:13","slug":"lack-of-gender-friendly-legislations-stand-in-the-way-of-achieving-gender-parity-gwfd-hears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalwomensforumdubai.com\/2020\/media-centre\/lack-of-gender-friendly-legislations-stand-in-the-way-of-achieving-gender-parity-gwfd-hears\/","title":{"rendered":"Lack of gender friendly legislations stand in the way of achieving gender parity, GWFD hears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Panel discusses solutions for addressing\ngender disparity <\/em><\/li><li><em>Lack of legal frameworks, social norms and\ncultural perceptions among the top challenges<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dubai, UAE; 17 February 2020<\/strong>: One of the biggest challenges to achieving gender parity in the world\nis the lack of gender friendly legislations and policies that provide women\nequal opportunities across all sectors, according to speakers at a session on\nthe second day of the Global Women\u2019s Forum Dubai 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session titled \u2018Achieving 2030\u2019s SDG\u2019s: Women\u2019s Engagement\u2019\ndiscussed solutions for addressing the issue of gender disparity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panellists participating in the panel discussion, moderated by Hadley\nGamble, Anchor, CNBC, mentioned the lack of legal frameworks as well as issues\nrelated to social norms and cultural perceptions among the top challenges that are\nslowing down the journey towards gender parity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shamsa Saleh, Secretary General, UAE Gender Balance Council, said: \u201cOne\nof the most important challenges we are facing globally today is the lack of\ngender friendly legislations and legal frameworks. There needs to be a sort of\ngender lens on policies across all sectors and all related policies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other challenge, I believe, is promoting awareness among children\nstarting from early childhood. We need to change the perceptions of children\nthat portray men as employees and women as housewives,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Echoing a similar opinion, Taline Koranchelian, Deputy Director, Middle\nEast and Central Asia Department, IMF, said: \u201cJob creation for men and women is\nof utmost importance. There is a need for broader policies to boost growth and\njob creation as well as provide equal opportunities for education and financial\naccess. Also, additional measures are required to facilitate balance between\nwork and family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zohra Khan, Global Policy Advisor, Governance &amp; National Planning,\nUN Women, said despite the progress in gender equality across the world, a lot\nof work remains to be done due to social norms and cultural perceptions.\nAdditionally, violence against women remains evident despite regulations,\ngender gap in the labour force participation, which remains at 31 per cent, has\nstagnated over the last two decades. Furthermore, only 26 per cent of\nArtificial Intelligence and data professionals are women.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the session, panellists mentioned the UAE as a shining example for\nprogress towards gender parity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdullah Lootah, Director General of Federal Competitiveness and\nStatistics Authority \u2013 UAE, highlighted the speed at which the UAE has revised\nits laws and legislations with regards to gender balance, which helped the UAE\nrise in global rankings. He mentioned how the UAE has nine women ministers and\na female representation of 50 per cent or more in the Federal National Council.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the UAE, we don\u2019t have gender bias, we are all working together to\nachieve one vision,\u201d he said noting that the UAE ranked first in the Arab World\nand 26th globally in the UNDP 2019 Gender Inequality Index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koranchelian pointed out how the IMF works with countries to ensure\nreforms in favour of women. \u201cWe provide policy advice to countries and focus on\ngender equality issues. We identify gaps in that particular country and provide\nspecific advice on how they can advance and what it means economically to\nadvance on gender issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panellists also emphasised the importance of partnerships between the\nprivate and government sector as well as global partnerships to ensure progress\nis made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saleh said: \u201cWhen changes are made in policies, we need to ensure it\u2019s\nchanged across the board. For example, with equal wage, we made sure it was\nimplemented across both the private and government sector in the UAE.
